Arbitration, Facilitation, Mediation, and Training

I served as a Commissioner with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service for more than 20 years. My work included mediation and facilitation of disputes in the areas of labor contract negotiations, grievances, equal employment opportunities and work place problems. In addition, I conducted training programs on a variety of topics including, but not limited to, communication skills, conflict management, decision-making processes, grievance processing, labor management relationships, negotiations (both traditional and collaborative), and progressive discipline. I worked with parties in the private sector as well as all levels of the public sector; local, county, state and federal.
Prior to joining FMCS I practiced as an attorney in private practice and as in-house counsel. I had responsibilities for the analysis, settlement negotiations and litigation in the areas of consumer law, contract interpretation, employment discrimination, Taft-Hartley benefit funds, social security disability claims, tort claims, and worker’s compensation.

My experience has prepared me to work with parties in any type of dispute resolution process they select in order to assist them to resolve their dispute or work towards a conflict management resolution or management system. I will work with the parties to decide which process works best for them. If need be we can revise the dispute resolution process when the parties decide another system will be more beneficial.
Facilitation of meeting in an orderly and constructive manner was a primary responsibility with FMCS; some parties find it beneficial, if not necessary, to have a facilitator to work through difficult issues.  In addition, if the parties believe training in a particular area or subject concerning communication, effective meetings or problem solving is warranted I can conduct the necessary training.
I am currently an adjunct professor at UMKC’s School of Law. I have taught a class in Lawyers and Dispute Resolution. I will teach a class in Mediation in the Spring of 2019.
